Create your first workspace: BigQuery

It is fast and easy to create a new BigQuery workspace in Facet. To start, you will need to have the connection information detailed in Connect Your Data: BigQuery.

Navigate to the "Create New Workspace" modal

Open the workspace list dropdown by clicking the workspace name in the center of your navigation bar. Then click the "+ Create New Workspace" button to open a new workspace creation modal.

Workspace

On the first modal screen, enter the following:

  • Workspace Name: Friendly name for your workspace. This is the name that will appear in your workspace list.
  • URL: Slug for your workspace, e.g. app.facetdata.com/workspaces/company_click_data

Click "Next" and you will see a confirmation that your workspace has been created.

Database

The next step in the workspace creation flow is to add your database information. Here you will specify what database you are connecting to (BigQuery) and the credentials you are using. Click "+ Create New Database" and enter the following:

  • Database Name: Friendly name for your database within Facet. This does not have to match your database name in BigQuery
  • Database Type: Select "BigQuery"
  • Service Account Key: Click the "+" button and select the file you created in Connect Your Data: BigQuery.

Click "Save" and you will see a confirmation that your database connection information has been saved, then click "Next".

Dataset

The next step in the workspace creation flow is to add your dataset information. Here you will choose the specific table in your database that you'd like to explore. Click "+ Create New Dataset" and enter the following:

  • Dataset Name: Friendly name for your dataset within Facet. This does not have to match your table name in BigQuery.
  • BigQuery Dataset: Dataset name in your BigQuery
  • Table Name: Table name in your BigQuery
  • Timestamp Field: The main timestamp field in your table. This will be "x-axis" for your graphs in Facet.
  • Minimum Granularity: The minimum granularity that is available/that you would like to see in Facet. (typically this is "Hourly")

Click "Save" and you will see a confirmation that your dataset has been created, then click "Next".

Dimensions

Now it's time to pick dimensions. Facet automatically pulls dimensions from the columns of your chosen table, and allows you select which ones you would like to use in your workspace.

Select the dimensions you find most useful, check at least one dimension as default, and hit "Next".

Check out Setting workspace dimensions for best practices on selecting dimensions.

Metrics

Finally, pick your metrics. Facet automatically pulls metrics from the numerical columns of your chosen table, and allows you select which ones you would like to use in your workspace.

By default, all calculations are set to "sum". Double-click into a calculation field to edit the calculation for that metric. Check out Setting workspace metrics for best practices on selecting, calculating, and formatting metrics. Or just create your own.

Select your metrics, check at least one metric as default, and your workspace is ready to go. Click "Save and Launch" and start exploring your data.
